The Town of Caceres

West of Trujillo 45 kms (28 miles) A58 by dual carriageway. Capital of Extremadura combining both an old and modern city, designated World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.

A free trade town founded in the 1st Century BC by the Romans, was occupied by the Visigoths and then populated by the Moors from the 8th to 11th C. The town was subsequently reconquered by Alfonso IX of Leon in 1227. Caceres is one of the cities competing for recognition as the “European City of Culture” in 2016

Caceres Plaza Mayor

The old quarter, certainly worth a visit, is accessed from the main square via El Arco de la Estrella. (Arch of the Star) It includes the cathedral of Santa Maria and many magnificent renaissance 15th Century & 16th Century mansions and palaces, together with a provincial archaeological museum.

30 towers from the Muslim period still stand in Caceres of which the Torre del Bujaco is the most famous. Caceres was left unharmed by the Peninsular war and has been used in film productions such as “1492” the story of Christopher Columbus.

The new town has good restaurants and in particular the well acclaimed Michelin starred restaurant called the Atrio T: 927 24 29 28 and many boutique shops.

We recommend the Parador T 927 21 17 59 and Torre Sande T 927 21 11 47 restaurants in the old quarter.
