Guadalupe

East of Trujillo 80 kms (48 miles) EX 102 Celebrated for the famous monastery and its shrine to the “Dark Virgin of Guadalupe”.

Pizarro Trujillo

Its origins can be traced back to 1325 when a simple farmer found the actual statue, rumoured to have been carved by none other than St Luke, of the Virgin Mary half-buried in his field.

With endorsements by the ruling Queen Isabella, as well as Columbus, the statue soon became famous worldwide, and to celebrate this, a shrine was built in her honour.

The monastery with its spectacular “Mudejar” cloister, houses various museums including the treasury, a magnificent sacristy with paintings by Zurbaran and the exhibitions and displays of unique vestments and 16th Century parchment choir books.

The monastery can be visited throughout the year, but as with many museums is closed on Mondays.
