In the 1980's The Museum of Roman Art was opened in order to house a superb collection of Roman statues, mosaics and unusual artefacts.

Today, Merida is the administrative capital of Extremadura. The “Archeological Ensemble of Merida” is a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1993.
