The Hieronymite Monastery was founded in 1408. In 1556 Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor retired to the monastery of Yuste after having abdicated the Spanish crown in favour of his son Philip ll of Spain, and the crown of the Holy Roman Empire in favour of his brother Ferdinand 1.

In 1556 the Monastery was expanded to accommodate the Emperor together with 50 to 60 members of his court. He died there in 1558.

The monastery incorporates a museum and displays Gothic and Renaissance Cloisters.
